Managing CMT
Unfortunately, we all know that we can’t cure our CMT – we can’t take a magic tablet and make it go away.
All we can do is manage the symptoms and keep on truckin’! And CMT is manageable, but if you are going to manage it, it needs to BE managed!
So, wear your splints, if they’ve been prescribed for you – and no, they don’t have to be boring black orthotics or white – they can be any colour (pretty much) you like! I know one CMT Kid who had pink butterflies all over her splints! Just ask the orthotist what colours are available!
See a physiotherapist regularly and do your exercises – see the page on exercise for more information. It really is worth getting to know your physiotherapist – most of them are lovely – and working hard on your fitness when you’re long is really worth while.
Surgery can also be an option – not nice to contemplate, but it can be helpful, if done at the right time (and the right time is debatable) and the right stuff is done. See our surviving in hospital page for more tips.
